In 1962 Wilber Shirley and Carl Lyerly
purchased Hill's Barbecue from Mr. Fred
Hill.

Renamed the Hwy. 70 Barbecue, it opened
on July 24th. Within the year, Mr. Lyerly
sold his share of the establishment to
Wilber and at that time the name was
changed to Wilber's Barbecue and a
tradition began.

Upon opening, the restaurant employed
only 11 people. Current employees number
100+.

As the business grew so did the number
and notability of it's patrons. The business
not only has had the opportunity to serve
the community through the years, but
some famous names, as well. Some
celebrities that have indulged in this
barbecue phenomenon are: President
George W. Bush Sr., President Bill Clinton,
Governor Jim Hunt, Governor Terry Sanford
and Senator Jesse Helms, to name just a
few.
